To create an AI system that could genuinely help people grow, we needed to understand how humans perceive each other's emotional states. Not just the surface recognition of smiles or frowns, but the deeper currents of why people feel as they do. My team’s journey was illuminated by Dr Lisa Feldman Barrett's groundbreaking research on emotion. Artificial intelligence has been focussed on prediction and pattern recognition for decades. The generative AI explosion has only expanded these abilities. Understanding the human mechanism that even our most intuitive emotional insights arise from sophisticated pattern recognition and prediction ought to change our assumptions about which jobs might be altered by artificial intelligence. The roles we considered safest from automation often rely on exactly this kind of pattern recognition and predictive modelling. From therapists to nurses, teachers to counsellors, many of our most human-centred professions depend on abilities that, at their core, involve processing complex patterns of information and relating them to large datasets to make increasingly accurate predictions. This doesn't mean these professions will disappear immediately. Rather, they will likely transform in ways we're only beginning to understand. Just as medical imaging has not replaced radiologists but given them powerful new tools for diagnosis, emotional AI might enhance rather than replace human capability in related fields. Imagine a teacher whose natural intuition is augmented by AI systems that can process subtle patterns of student behaviour across time helping adapt to a student’s neurodiversity or even trauma. Or a therapist whose empathetic understanding is supported by systems that can analyse patterns of language and expression too subtle for human perception. Yet emotional understanding represents just one thread in an expanding tapestry of artificial intelligence capabilities. Each breakthrough we achieve doesn't just solve a specific problem; it reverberates through our assumptions about human unique abilities. Like ripples spreading across still water, each new understanding transforms multiple fields simultaneously. The same principles that allow AI to comprehend emotional states might help it recognise subtle patterns in financial markets, anticipate natural disasters, or predict emerging political trends. I often think of that first moment when my team’s AI system accurately interpreted a complex emotional state, just as a skilled human mentor would. The Turing test came to mind. When scientists first postulated modern AI, Alan Turing, designed a test: if a machine could have a conversation with a human and the human could not detect the machine, that denoted an intelligent machine. ChatGPT passed the Turing test in 2023; however, no one said it had become truly intelligent. In fact it opened up conversations about what intelligence really means. This led from intelligence to sentience to consciousness, putting all of these concepts into question. As it changes our lives, AI forces us to ask questions that were previously only for philosophers. The answers to these questions will reveal how the job markets will evolve and how quickly we need to find new solutions. The future arrives through the complex interplay of expanding technological capabilities and our evolving understanding of human potential. The challenge before us is to imagine and create new forms of collaboration that enhance both human and machine capabilities.
